{"id":1293,"date":"2025-09-22T10:57:43","date_gmt":"2025-09-22T17:57:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/richardson-lab.nau.edu\/?p=1293"},"modified":"2025-09-22T10:57:53","modified_gmt":"2025-09-22T17:57:53","slug":"science-in-the-park-2025-report","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/richardson-lab.nau.edu\/?p=1293","title":{"rendered":"Science in the Park: 2025 Report"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>This weekend, Darby (shown below), Perry, and Rosie, an Ecoss\u00a0undergraduate student, staffed the Ecoss booth at the Festival of Science&#8217;s &#8220;Science in the Park&#8221; event, and it was a hit! Kids and parents got to test their lungs in our \u201cHow much CO<sub>2<\/sub> can you blow?\u201d competition using the lab\u2019s Flux Puppy CO<sub>2 <\/sub>measurement system. One superstar kid set a record at 39,200 ppm\u2014that&#8217;s almost 4%! Through the challenge, they learned how our instruments measure CO<sub>2<\/sub> and other gases, and then guessed which mason jar ecosystem\u2014aquatic or terrestrial\u2014was producing more CO<sub>2<\/sub>. Most guessed correctly: the jar with soil from a local ponderosa pine forest was the winner! We also had a station for spying on plants with digital cameras. A poster of PhenoCam images from Bartlett Experimental Forest showed how the forest changes through the seasons, and kids had fun identifying the start, peak, and end of the growing season. The beauty of these seasonal transitions even moved one visitor to tears!
